Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Lady Lions volleyball team (7-15, 1-11 MSC) fell in four sets (17-25, 14-25, 25-21, 21-25) on Tuesday to UT Southern (19-8, 6-6 MSC) in Mid-South Conference action.
The first big run of the match didn't come until late in the first set after a back-and-forth start. UT Southern went on an 8-0 run after the Lady Lions led 13-12 to go up 20-13. The Lady Lions were able to cut the lead to four, but the Firehawks scored five of the next six points to take a 1-0 set lead.
The Lady Lions got out to a quick start in the second set, leading 5-2, but UT Southern rallied to take a 6-5 lead.
The two teams traded blows before the Firehawks went on an 8-0 run to close out the second set and go up 2-0.
In the third set, UT Southern won the first point, but that was the only lead they held in the entire set. The Lady Lions scored the next two points to take a 2-1 lead, and despite a quick 2-2 tie, FHU was able to lead for the entire set, by as many as seven points, on their way to a set win to keep the match alive.
The fourth set was all UT Southern for the vast majority, leading 19-10 late in the set. But the Lady Lions mounted an exceptional comeback attempt, winning 11 of the next 14 points to make the score 22-21, Firehawks lead, with a chance to go to a deciding fifth set.
UT Southern was able to hold off the comeback, though, scoring the next three points and closing out the contest.
Kacey Donegan had a strong outing, recording a double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs.
Allie Humphry also had a double-double in the match with 34 assists and 16 digs to go alongside four service aces.
Emma Campbell finished the contest with 18 digs, and Ann Elise Jackson had six blocks.
The Lady Lions will be back in action on Thursday when they host Bethel University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
