Lady Lions open up conference play with win over Phoenix

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Lady Lions basketball team (5-0, 1-0 MSC) opened Mid-South Conference play at home on Thursday with a 77-67 win over Cumberland University (3-3, 0-1 MSC).

The Lady Lions struggled to score in the first quarter, but junior forward Caroline Chambers had a strong start, scoring the first six points for the team on her first three shots. FHU finished the first quarter trailing by four, but after the break, the team was able to refocus on both ends of the floor. Alyssa LeMay scored 12 points in the second quarter, helping the team finish the first half with a 10-point lead.

To start the second half, the Phoenix scored first three points, but the Lady Lions were quick to respond, growing the lead up to 52-41. Despite excellent shooting from Cumberland, FHU was able to maintain high energy on the defensive end, which allowed them to keep the lead and secure the victory.

LeMay had an outstanding performance, scoring a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Chambers was great in her efforts, putting up 19 points and seven rebounds, and Chynia Brooks had 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers along with five rebounds, four steals and four assists.

The Lady Lions will continue conference play at home against No. 14 Lindsey Wilson on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
