Lady Lions stifle Bears on the road

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The Freed-Hardeman University volleyball team (14-10, 3-6 MSC) won its second straight match on Monday with a win over Pikeville (2-12, 0-11 MSC) in four sets (16-25, 25-9, 25-16, 25-17).

To start the opening set, the Bears got out to a quick 7-1 lead. The team would continue their momentum as they stretched their lead to 13-4 halfway through the set. The hosts would lead by as many as 12 points, as they cruised to a 1-0 set lead.

In the second set, the Lady Lions would find their rhythm and open on a 6-0 run. The team would keep their momentum going and lead 13-8 midway through the set. From there, the Lady Lions would use a 16-1 run to claim the set and even the match at one set apiece.

In the third set, the Lady Lions momentum from the second set would carry over as the team got out to a 10-1 lead to open the set. Midway through the set, the teams would trade as scores as the Lady Lions led 13-4. The team would lead by as many as ten points in the set, as they cruised to a 2-1 set lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Lady Lions would again get off to a hot start, as they led 5-1 early on. The Bears would respond and cut the lead to one point at 6-5 before the Lady Lions would use a 3-0 run to separate and not look back. The team would stretch their lead to as many as nine points in the set, as they cruised to a match win.

The team was anchored defensively by Reilly Fulton who had 21 digs, followed by Allie Humphry who had 11 digs of her own.

Offensively, Kacey Donegan led the team with 11 kills and Emma Self dished out 11 assists in the win.

The Lady Lions are set to continue their road trip on Tuesday as they visit University of the Cumberlands. The match is set to start at 4 pm.
