Lady Lions take down Bears

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Freed-Hardeman University volleyball team (16-14, 5-10 MSC) took down Shawnee State (10-10, 8-7 MSC) in four sets (22-25, 25-14, 25-13, 25-21) on Thursday evening.

To start the set, the teams would trade blows with the Lady Lions holding a 7-6 lead early in the set. The team would use a 6-2 run to lead 13-8 midway through the set, but the Bears would use an 11-5 run to take the lead in the set at 19-18 and a 6-4 run to take the first set for a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, the Lady Lions would regain their composure and open with a 9-4 early. The team would continue their run and stretch their lead to 14-7 midway through the set. From there, the team would use a 11-7 run to claim the second set and tie the contest 1-1.

In the third set, the teams traded blows once again as the Lady Lions led 6-5 early in the set. The team would notch a 7-0 run to lead 13-5 midway through the set to capture momentum, and they would finish the set on a 12-6 run to take a 2-1 lead in the contest.

In the fourth set, the teams would go back and forth early, with the Bears holding a 6-5 lead. The Lady Lions would use a 8-5 run to lead 13-10 midway through the set. The Bears would respond and tie the game at 13, before the Lady Lions used a 6-2 run to take a 19-15 lead. The Bears would remain relentless and cut their deficit to one-point at 20-19, but the Lady Lions would finish the set on a 5-2 run to claim the match.

Claire Walker would lead the offensive charge for the Lady Lions with 21 kills on the night.

Emma Self toted a 25-assist performance, along with Allie Humphry, who dished out 24 assists of her own alongside nine digs.

Reilly Fulton anchored the team defensively with 25 digs, followed by Ashlynne Clifft with 11 digs of her own. The Bears came into the match as the league-leaders in blocks, and the Lady Lions out-blocked the team 11-2 in the match.

The Lady Lions will close out their homestand on Saturday for the regular-season finale against Thomas More. The match is scheduled to start at 12 noon at the Brewer Sports Center.
