Lady Lions Fall Just Short in Heartbreaker

Box Score

HENDERSON, TN. — The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions (13-4, 6-4) took on conference foe Campbellsville University Tigers (16-2, 8-2) at home on Saturday, and were not able to fend off the Tigers offensive physicality. The Tigers came in to the game ranked #3 in the nation, and the Lions left it all on the floor against the national powerhouse.

The Lady Lions knew that this game would be tough, but with two of Campbellsville's starting five missing from action, morale was high among the camp, and the Lady Lions came out playing confident on both sides of the ball. Lady Lion guard Chynia Brooks looked to lead the offense in the first quarter as she gained four points. The Lady Lions continued to find the next pass to an open teammate, playing unselfish basketball. Due to some hard-nosed defense from FHU, and the aforementioned unselfish play on offense the score was tied 31-31 at the halftime interval.

The second half brought on all kinds of nail-biting action as the Lions led 45-42 heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was a physical battle riddled with emotion, as the Brewer Sports Center was rocking with voices from the crowd in support and opposition to the home team. The two teams were able to put on an entertaining fourth quarter in which the Tigers were able to counter the Lady Lions 3 point lead, and go on to win by four. Despite the close loss, the Lady Lions proved that they have the ability to compete with the best teams in the conference, and furthermore the nation.

The game was played down low as Caroline Chambers and Kaylee Odom both accrued 10 points to go alongside 10 from Alyssa LeMay. KJ White was also able to play a great game scoring seven points. Rebounding leaders from the game include Kinlee Varnell with eight, and Kaylee Odom with seven.

As Mid-South Conference play continues, Thomas More remains the #1 team in the nation, and Campbellsville the #3. The Lady Lions are fighting hard to gain quality placement in the conference tournament to knock off these national powerhouses.

The Lady Lions will play Oakwood on Monday, January 24, at home in the Brewer Sports Center at 6:00 PM.
