Lions Survive Thriller Against Pikeville

Box Score

The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (17-11, 12-9 MSC) defeated the University of Pikeville (15-12, 8-11 MSC) Thursday night by a score of 77-74.

The Lions gained momentum in the first half, going ahead 16-5 with 13:22 remaining.  During the half, the Lions shot 58.3% from the field compared to Pikeville's 41.2%.  The team also made 50% of threes and 80% of free throws.  The score at the end of the first half was 43-35.

In the second half, the Bears threatened to take the lead many times.  However, six straight points from Kortland Martin gave the Lions an extra cushion at 70-63.  The closing seconds of the game proved to be a nail biting experience.  With just three seconds left, the Bears put up a three-point shot to tie the game, but it was no good.  The Lions shot 39.3% from the field and made 50% of threes and 56.3% of free throws in the second half.

Three Lions scored double digits during the game.  Martin led the way by scoring 23 points, Geraldo Lane scored 15 points, and Wanya King scored 12 points.

The Lions look ahead to their final regular-season matchup against the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday at Brewer Sports Center.
