Box Score HENDERSON, TN – It was a historic night in the Brewer Sports Center as Kortland Martin set the school's all-time scoring record in a 101-80 victory for the Lions (19-11, 13-9) over visiting Bethel University (12-13, 8-10) to begin postseason play.
The game began as a back-and-forth affair throughout much of the first half, with neither team leading by more than six until a Ryley McClaran triple put the Lions up nine with 2:24 remaining in the half. Another three on the ensuing possession by McClaran got the packed crowd roaring as the Lions extended their lead to a game-high 11. FHU finished the first half shooting 47 percent from the floor and held a 43-31 lead. Kortland Martin led the way offensively with 13 points and 2 assists.
The Lions shot a blistering 63 percent from the field in the second half and connected on 6 of their 11 attempts from the three-point line. Kortland Martin scored 20 of his game-high 33 in the second half and left the court to MVP chants with 2:45 remaining in the game. Francis Agbata and Silas Clark both got into the scoring action late in the game. Clark nailed two 3 pointers while Agbata threw down a powerful slam to make the crowd erupt and take the Lions over the century mark for the first time in regulation all season.
Kortland Martin dropped in 33 points and became the school's all-time leading scorer in his last game at the Brewer Sports Center. Wanya King and Jeremiah Alexander had great games off the bench scoring 14 and 12 of their own. Sophomore Ryley McClaran was the only other Lion in double digits with 13 points while making 3 of his 4 shots from behind the arc.
The Lions now advance the quarterfinal round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Saturday in Bowling Green, KY. FHU will be slated to take on the No. 3 seed Georgetown at 8 p.m. CST. The Lions split the season series with Georgetown with the road team winning each contest.
