Box Score HENDERSON, TN – In a game where Freed-Hardeman did not hold a lead during regulation, the Lady Lions put together a thrilling come from behind win, 69-66, in overtime on Thursday evening over visiting Tennessee Southern.
The first half was a struggle for the Lady Lions on the offensive side of the ball. The Lady Lions shot only 28 percent going into the locker room. The defensive effort of FHU was able to keep them in the game after only scoring 21 points in the half. The Lady Lions went into the locker room only down 9 by a score of 30-21.
The basket began to open up for the Lady Lions throughout the second half. FHU shot a more efficient 39.4 percent in the 3rd and 4th quarters of this game. The Lady Lions entered the 4th quarter trailing by 8, and outscored UT Southern 21-13 in the frame to force overtime. Trailing 57-55 with 8 seconds left, Freshman forward Kaylee Odom had a clutch offensive rebound and put-back to tie the game at 57 all.
Overtime was controlled by the Lady Lions. Alyssa LeMay and Kinlee Varnell took over the extra period and outscored UT Southern 10-9 by themselves. The Lady Lions were able to close out the victory with a key forced turnover and walked away with a 69-66 win.
Alyssa LeMay led the way for the Lady Lions scoring 24 points including 19 in the second half/OT, she also added 8 rebounds. Kinlee Varnell was the only other Lady Lion in double digits finishing the night with 13 points.
This victory marked the second time these two schools have met this season. The Lady Lions also defeated UT Southern 54-45 in Pulaski on December 31st.
