MCKENZIE, TN - The Freed-Hardeman Lions headed an hour north to take on historic rival Bethel University in a tightly contested contest on Monday night. The Lions behind the leadership of Kortland Martin were able to claim the victory by a score of 79-72.
Wanya King and Kortland Martin led the way offensively for the Lions throughout the first half. The senior duo combined for 25 of the Lions 43 first half points. FHU trailed 27-22 with 7:53 remaining in the half. The Lions took control from then on finishing the half on a 21-8 run to take a 43-35 lead into the locker room.
The Lions were able to maintain a lead throughout the second half, however were unable to ever run away from the Wildcats in what was a thrilling game. The game was tied 69 all with 5 minutes left in the game. A Hunter Scurlock layup broke the tie and the Lions locked in defensively down the stretch to secure the road win, 79-72. The Lions only allowed one made field goal in the last 5 minutes.
Kortland Martin finished the night leading the Lions in every category. He finished with 31 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Hunter Scurlock finished an efficient night shooting 5-7 from the field for 11 points of his own. Scurlock added 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Wanya King had 13 points.
UP NEXT: The Lions will be on the road to face the number 10 team in the nation on Thursday night at Thomas More (Ky.). Tip-off is slated for 7:00 PM CST
