LEBANON, Tenn. — A few days after sweeping the Bearcats of Rust (Miss.) College, the Freed-Hardeman University University Lady Lions returned to Mid-South Conference play where they were topped by the Cumberland (Tenn.) University Phoenix 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-12).
The Lady Lions (10-10, 0-7 MSC) fell behind 4-1 in the first set before
Catherine Hackett planted a kill, followed by a tandem block from
Avery Harris and
Avery Young before
Charley Fulton's service ace gave FHU a 5-4 lead. FHU would battle with the Phoenix until a 19-19 tie forced a Cumberland timeout. The Phoenix exploded out of the timeout to score six unanswered points to win the set 25-19.
In a similar manner to the opening set, the Lady Lions kept the Phoenix (14-14, 5-3 MSC) within striking distance when Harris's kill gave the Lady Lions a 13-12 lead. For the second consecutive set, Cumberland would storm their way to 25 points, winning 13 of the next 14 rallies to take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-14 set win.
It was an early run by CU that took any hope out of the Lady Lions by opening with a 5-0 run. FHU could not get anything going in the final set, falling 25-12.
Avery Harris led FHU's attack with six kills, while
Charley Fulton led the back row with 12 digs.
