HENDERSON — A fortnight after facing the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots in Williamsburg, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions hoped to return the hospitality at the Brewer Sports Center. In both cases, the Lady Lions were on the losing end, falling to the Patriots 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-14) on Friday night.
The Lady Lions (11-11, 0-8 MSC) could not keep up with the hard-hitting Patriots, who as a team hit .340 in the match. The longest rally for the Lady Lions in the first set came near the end when
Avery Young's kill gave
Audrey Orton the serve where
Morgan Wilson treated fans to a kill. An attack error from the Patriots allowed the Lady Lions to keep serve, but ultimately dropped the first set 25-14.
It was a blistering start from the Patriots (18-9, 6-2 MSC) that put FHU on their heels.
Ann Elise Jackson gave the Lady Lions their first point with a kill at 1-1, but FHU would not score again until an
Alanys Ruíz Rivera kill saw the score now at 10-2 in favor of the Patriots.
Catherine Hackett and
Avery Harris would team up for a block, but could do little more to slow down the UC hitters, who claimed the middle frame 25-10.
Charley Fulton notched a service ace in the third frame, but that was followed by the Patriots scoring six unanswered points. FHU would record a match-high eight kills in the final set, but that was not enough to overcome the 25-14 set win to drop the match 3-0.
Alanys Ruíz Rivera and
Avery Young both connected for seven kills, with
Masey Kate Adams returning to the lineup with a team-high nine assists.
Charley Fulton led the defense with 11 digs, while
Catherine Hackett had a big night at the next, assisting on three tandem blocks.
