Harris's big night gets FHU back in win column

HENDERSON — In their final home match of the 2023 season, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions bounced back with a 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-12, 25-11) victory over the Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Eagles. Avery Harris had a massive night smashing 17 kills - the most by any Lady Lion this season in a single match.

It was a fantastic start for the Lady Lions (12-13), With Alanys Ruíz Rivera opening a 6-0 run with three service aces. The visiting Eagles battled back to 16-13 before the Lady Lions roared ahead with eight unanswered points to reach set point at 24-13. The Eagles tacked on one more point before Harris ended the first set with a 25-14 score.

The second set began in a mirror image of the first with Williams Baptist (4-19) beginning with seven unanswered points. FHU would answer with a 5-0 run to pull FHU within two points. Despite strong play for the remainder of the set, the early push proved too much to overcome with WBU tying the match 1-1 with a 25-22 set victory.

While the second set was evenly matched, the third set saw FHU collect a match-high 14 kills, while WIlliams Baptist had a match-low three with a 25-12 score to give the Lady Lions a 2-1 edge.

The final set began with Masey Kate Adams anchoring a 5-0 run including back-to-back service aces. After a complete rotation, Adams stepped to the service line to lead FHU on a six point unanswered streak until Avery Young connected for the kill to win the set 25-11 and the match 3-1.

Not only was Avery Harris racking up the kills, it was also with astonishing efficiency with a .615 attack percentage, committing just one attack error. Trailing Harris was Aver Young who had 11 kills. Charley Fulton pulled up 16 digs while Masey Kate Adams had a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs. Ann Elise Jackson led the front row with five blocks.
