Even quarter defense helps FHU to second win

PULASKI, Tenn. — Visiting the University of Tennessee Southern Firehawks, the No. 20 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions used strong defenses in the second and fourth quarters to allow just seven total points in those two quarters on the way to a 57-42 victory.

The Lady Lions (2-1) found themselves in a hole early, with the hosting Firehawks jumping ahead by six points. Raegan Purvine and Carissa Curtis both helped by sinking 3-pointers to keep the Lady Lions in reach. After Curtis tallied a second long ball at 2:12, the Lady Lions went 6-6 from the free-throw line to end the quarter leading by two, 23-21.

Neither team had much offense in the second quarter with UTS (0-1) bucketing a layup at 8:53 before going silent the remainder of the frame. On the other end of the floor, the Lady Lions added 10 points with Alaina Stiles joining Purvine with triples to go to the halftime break leading 33-23.

FHU began having separation in the third quarter, with layups from Purvine and Chumley being chased by triples from KJ White and Brooklyn Crouch to vault the Lady Lions to a 47-37 lead heading to the final quarter.

The Lady Lion defense was strong in the final frame, not allowing a single field goal to be scored by the hosts, forcing UTS to go 0-10 and allowing five free throws. In the meantime, the Lady Lions put the finishing touches on a 57-42 victory.

FHU was led on the offensing end by Raegan Purvine and Carissa Curtis who both sank three 3-pointers en route to 15-point nights. Elli Chumley led the boards, grabbing six rebounds, while Kalea Eckerle-Fleming joining Purvine with a team-high three assists.
