FHU men's soccer outlasted by Patriots

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — The Freed-Hardeman University Lions put up a fight against the No. 20 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots, but a late goal in the second half took the wind out of the sails of the Lions in a 3-1 defeat.

FHU (6-6-2, 0-3-0 MSC) fell behind early when Salvador Martinez scored the first goal for the hosting Patriots in just the third minute. UC tacked on a second goal at 14:20 to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lions were able to get one shot off against the Cumberlands' (5-2-3, 2-1-0 MSC) keeper in the match, and it was a big one when - at 18:42 - Thabo Mahlaha found Rodrigo Tostado for the sophomore's sixth goal of the season.

A goal just before halftime and a goal at 83:11 completed a hat trick for UC's Martinez to put the game out of reach of the Lions in a 4-1 final.

Omer Shifris faced 15 shots in the contest, saving five of the nine shots on goal.
