WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Freed-Hardeman University volleyball will continue their hunt for the first Mid-South Conference victory of 2023 after being defeated by the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-12).
FHU (9-9, 0-6 MSC) kept the first set close, trailing by three in the middle of the of the set after
Catherine Hackett slammed a kill to make it 13-10. Hope was dashed when the hosting Patriots won 10 of the last 12 available points to claim victory in the first set 25-14.
After a pair of attack errors by the Cumberlands (15-8, 4-1 MSC) were followed by a kill from
Alanys Ruíz Rivera and a service ace from Masey Kate Adams helped the Lady Lions jump ahead to a 5-1 lead. FHU would then go on a four-point run capped off with a tandem block from
Avery Harris and
Ariana Wells to jump ahead 12-4. Undeterred, the Patriots pushed points until forcing an FHU timeout with the Lioness's lead down to 20-18. Winning the next four points, the Patriots continued their rally into extra points before a set of kills claimed set two 26-24.
Running out of gas after the close second set, the Lady Lions were unable to keep pace with the heavy swings of the Cumberlands, who had 17 kills in the final frame at a .455 rate to take the set and match 25-12.
Avery Harris and
Alanys Ruíz Rivera led FHU's offense with six kills each.
Charley Fulton pulled up a team-high nine digs, while
Masey Kate Adams tallied 14 assists.Â
