HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Beginning a long road trip, the No. 8 Freed-Hardeman University Lions picked up a midweek victory over the Oakwood (Ala.) University Ambassadors 77-45
Quan Lax got the Lions (4-0) rolling with back-to-back layups before a 3-pointer put the Lions on top 7-2. Freed-Hardeman's defense shut down the Oakwood offense before it could could started with a layup at 18:31 being the only OU field goal until a 3-pointer at 5:12 ended an 0-14 skid. During that span, the Lions would score 12 unanswered points to take a 25-5 lead. Defensively, both
JJ Wheat and
Geraldo Lane would grab four steals in the first half, helping FHU score 17 first-half points off of turnovers. The Lions moved the ball well in the opening frame, with seven different players getting buckets on the way to a 36-11 halftime lead.
Oakwood (0-5) began sinking 3-pointers to begin the second half, with the trey at 11:35 closing the gap to 48-28; however, the Lions continued to dominate in the paint, scoring 52 points in the key to the Ambassadors' 12.
Phil Horton would have a late flurry, scoring five points in the span of 40 seconds to help close the door on the big win.
Five Lions ended the night in double figures with
JJ Wheat leading the way with 18 points, also totaling a team-high six steals.
Geraldo Lane followed with a 16-point, eight-rebound effort.
Peyton Law was 6-8 from the field to total 12 points, while
Phil Horton finished with 11 points.
Quan Lax finished with 10 points, going 2-3 from long range.
