HENDERSON — The No. 10 Freed-Hardeman University Lions used their stout defense to force 22 turnovers against the Reinhardt (Ga.) University Eagles. FHU made the guests pay for those turnovers by scoring 37 points on their way to a 103-59 home-opening win.
Though the Lions (2-0) did not score the first points of the game,
Quan Lax's layup was followed by another from
Hunter Scurlock - two of FHU's 68 points in the paint. Perennially known for their high shooting percentages, the Lions make 10 of their first 14 shots, including 3-pointers from Lax and
Phil Horton. The Eagles remained undeterred at the start, with a pull-up jumper putting the Lion lead at 19-14 with 14:17 remaining in the half. After that break; however, the Lions would score six unanswered points to take an 11-point lead. The tandem of Scurlock and
Geraldo Lane would team up late in the first half, with the pair tallying 10 points in the span of two pinutes to help FHU to a 44-28 lead. Back-to-back layups from
Sam Powell and
Dalton Colbert closed the first act with FHU on top 53-34.
Any time Reinhardt (0-1) would make a field goal at the start of the second half, the Lions would answer with at least two. A layup from Peyton law at 17:33 gave the Lions a lead that would never fall below 20 points the remainder of the contest. Lane took off in the second half, scoring 12 points. The last 10 minutes of the contest was all FHU, with the home team out-scoring the opposition 26-6 from 8:16 to the final buzzer. A monstrous dunk from
Devin Hill would close the book on the Lions second win of the season with a 103-54 final.
FHU shot 58% from the floor, garnering 14 steals and dishing out 21 assists.
Six Lions were in double figures, led by
Geraldo Lane's 19-point effort.
Hunter Scurlock followed with a 7-9 night from the floor to tally 15 points, while
JJ Wheat added 14 points.
Phil Horton was 3-3 from long range to help him to 13 points,
Peyton Law had 11 points, and
