Women's basketball unable to overcome big fourth quarter in loss

HENDERSON — The No. 24 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions led the (RV) Brewton-Parker College Barons for 26:31 in Monday's matchup. The guests would out-score the Lady Lions 27-18 in the final frame to snap FHU's 11-game winning streak 66-62.

Both the Lady Lions (11-2) and the Barons flexed their defensive muscles, with neither team being able to find the hoop with regularity until a jumper from Rachel Satterly at 4:11 sparked a 13-0 run that ended with 3-pointers from Carissa Curtis and Brooklyn Couch. A late triple from the guests ended the opening quarter with the Lady Lions on top 22-12.

The second quarter was unkind to the visiting Barons (12-1), as BPC went 4-12 from the field; however, two of those were long balls with four points being added from the charity stripe. FHU opened the quarter with a layup from Kalea Fleming-Eckerle, and closed the half with a Satterly jumper to give the Lady Lions a 34-26 lead at the halftime break.

It was the third quarter that proved hurtful to FHU's shooting, with the Lady Lions going 4-14 from the floor. On the other end, Brewton parer tallied a pair of 3-pointers to tie the game at 36-36 at 2:58. Kayle Odom joined Satterly to close the third frame clinging to a 44-39 lead.

In the final quarter Brewton-Parker exploded with 27 points, with 14 of those being from the free-throw line. The Lady Lions found themselves down by two possessions a majority of the quarter with the 3-pointer not falling. BPC scored their final nine points from the free-throw line to keep the Lady Lions at bay tor the 66-62 final.

The teams were even in most categories, both going 42% from the field. The biggest difference was at the charity stripe where Brewton-Parker went 19-28 while the Lady Lions made all four of their attempts. The Lady Lions led the rebounding battle 44-24.

Rachel Satterly led FHU's scoring, going 10-21 from the field to bucket 24 points. Reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week Kaylee Odom recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
