Women's basketball returns with victory

BABSON PARK, Fla. — Playing in their first game in nearly two weeks, the No. 24 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions picked up a win over Webber International (Fla.) University 51-34.

FHU (13-2) found themselves down throughout the first quarter, not collecting their first shot from the floor until 7:55 with KJ White's layup. On the other end, Webber opened the game with a triple before a layup at 6:15 gave the hosts a seven-point advantage. The Lady Lions settled down at the end of the frame with Raegan Purvine's 3-pointer with nine seconds left leaving the Lady Lions to trail 13-12.

The second quarter proved to be the lowest-scoring with the Lady Lions and the Warriors (1-9) combining for 13 points. Kaylee Odom's free throw at 8:46 tied the late December match before Elli Chumley's layup gave FHU their first lead at 17-15. Webber answered back with a pair of jumpers to claim a 20-18 halftime lead.

The second half was all Lady Lions with White's 3-pointer sparking a 15-6 third quarter. Kelsey Bender chipped in with three layups before Brooklyn Crouch tacked on a pair of free throws to move to the final quarter with the Lady Lions leading 33-26.

Freed-Hardeman put separation in the fourth quarter, thanks in part to going 6-7 from the free-throw line. Carissa Curtis clicked for a 3-pointer, while Kalea Fleming-Eckerle added a pair of long balls to give FHU the 51-34 win.

The Lady Lions were 5-19 from long range hile the Warriors went 2-9 from deep.

KJ White led FHU's offense with 12 points, joining Rachel Satterly with a team-high three assists. Satterly also led the Lady Lions with six rebounds.
