FHU sweeps through Southwestern Christian

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions woke up fresh before taking on the Southwestern Christian (Okla.) University Eagles on Saturday. Alanys Ruíz Rivera and Avery Young notched double-doubles to lead FHU past SWC 30 (25-19, 25-14, 25-20).

It was a hotly contested first set when FHU (3-0) fells behind 13-10 after the Eagles rattled off six unanswered points to force a Lady Lion timeout. Whatever Coach Amanda Cunningham said in the huddle worked as Ann Elise Jackson got the side out with a kill, sending Masey Kate Adams to the service line. From there the due ot Adams and Jackson sparked an 8-0 run to turn a 13-10 deficit into an 18-13 lead. The final points of the frame were back and forth, but an Avery Young kill tallied the set point at 25-19.

The Lady Lion attack was near perfect in the second set, smashing 19 kills while committing one error. The set began with Southwestern Christian (1-2) taking a 12-11 lead. For the second straight set, the Lady Lions would dominate the second half of the set, winning all but three of the available points to storm ahead to a 25-14 victory.

The final set began with FHU spotting SWC five points before answering to even the score at 5-5. The rest of the set was back-and-forth with neither team holding a lead of more than two points until Ruíz Rivera's kill gave the Lady Lions an 18-15 lead. That lead would never be relinquished as the set ended on a 6-2 run to win the set and the match 25-20.

Alanys Ruíz Rivera and Avery Young helped the Lady Lions with a set of double-doubles, the former with a team-high 18 digs to go with her 10 kills. The latter notched 11 kills while pulling up 12 digs. Also in the double-digit kills category was the 11-kill performance from Avery Harris. Masey Kate Adams got a season-high 41 assists in the sweep.
