Lions top Tigers in MSC meetup

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Continuing in Mid-South Conference action, the No. 7 Freed-Hardeman University Lions took care of business against the Campbellsville (Ky.) University Tigers 84-69.

Despite watching Campbellsville open the game with a 3-pointer, Freed-Hardeman (16-2, 4-0 MSC) answered with back-to-back layups from Quan Lax before JJ Wheat bucketed seven out the Lions' next 11 unanswered points. Campbellsville ended the FHU run by knocking down consecutive 3-pointers to set the score at 15-12 in favor of FHU at 10:05. Freed-Hardeman's defense would swipe away 12 steals in the first half with Hunter Scurlock's scoop and score at 1:06 leading FHU to a 45-28 halftime lead.

Campbellsville (13-5, 1-3 MSC) nearly doubled their half scores, bucketing 41 points in the second half. Ryley McClaran sank a 3-pointer at the 6:51 mark to give the Lions their largest lead of the night at 21 points. Campbellsville would hit late free throws, but the early lead was enough for the Lions to keep the hosts at bay in the 84-69 victory.

The Lion defense forced 23 turnovers - with 18 steals - converting those to 23 points. Both teams spent plenty of time at the charity stripe with Campbellsville going 20-27 from the line and Freed-Hardeman going 18-25.

Despite only scoring three points in the second half, JJ Wheat's 18-point first half helped him to lead the Lion scoring with 21 points, going 10-13 from the free-throw line. Geraldo Lane followed with 15 points, while Quan Lax scored 13. Hunter Scurlock was 4-6 from the floor to tally 10 points. Wheat also led the team with six steals while joining Scurlock with a team-high six rebounds.
