HENDERSON — Across the final 10 minutes of play, the No. 22 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions out-scored the ninth-ranked Lady Tigers of Georgetown (Ky.) College 22-5, vaulting them to a 64-51 victory to move back into the win column. Despite the opposition averaging 88.8 points per game, the Lady Lions allowed GC just 51 points - the fewest points bucketed by the Tigers this season.
Known for their defensive play this season, the Lady Lions (17-4, 3-2 MSC) stifled the opposition, forcing Georgetown to go 1-14 from the field in the first quarter. What kept the Tigers in the game; however, was their 8-8 turn at the charity stripe. After
Elli Chumley's layup at 8:48 opened the scoring,
Kaylee Odom would tally the next seven FHU points, two from the field and five from the free-throw line.
Rachel Satterly got into the mix at 2:11 with a jumper to give the Lady Lions a two-point edge before
Kelsey Bender joined
KJ White and
Carissa Curtis to close out the first quarter with the Lady Lions leading 16-10
The Georgetown (17-3, 2-2 MSC) offense began to click in the second quarter - outscoring the Lady Lions 26-11. The Tigers would open up a 10-0 run when a 3-pointer gave the guests their first lead at 6:18. White answered with a triple of her own, but Georgetown pulled ahead with a 12-point unanswered streak to extend to a 12-point lead. Satterly drained a 3-pointer in the final minute to move to the break with the Lady Lions down 36-27.
In the third frame, the Lady Lions stayed in striking distance, drawing even with the Tigers twice, but were unable to overtake the visitors.
Raegan Purvine's 3-pointer began an 11-point run that ended when White's layup tied matters 38-38 at 3:48. The Tigers would tally a pair of field goals in the final minute to head to the final quarter nursing a 46-42 lead.
The Lady Lions would then have the big fourth period that began with White's layup, then a layup from Odom at 8:38 gave FHU a lead they would never relinquish. FHU would make their late free throws to used an 8-0 run to take a 15-point lead before finishing matters with a 64-51 victory.
Both teams made more free throws than they made shots from the field, with FHU making 19 shots from the floor, and going 21-28 from the free-throw line. Georgetown was 18-19 from the line while going 14-48 from the field. The teams were even by forcing 16 turnovers each but the Lady Lions took advantage by scoring 22 points off of turnovers while the Tigers managed 10.
KJ White's 6-9 night from the floor helped her lead the team with 15 points.
Kaylee Odom and
Raegan Purvine each collected 12 points, with the former going 8-9 from the free-throw line and the latter sinking ta pair of treys.
Rachel Satterly's 10-point effort also included grabbing six rebounds. White led the Lady Lions at the glass by grabbing seven rebounds while
Brooklyn Crouch collected three crucial steals.
