HENDERSON — A defensive battle waged on the Josh Riley Soccer Complex Tuesday night with the Lions of Freed-Hardeman University hosting the No. 9 University of the Cumberlands Patriots. A strong push in the second half from Cumberlands doomed FHU in a 3-0 loss.
The Patriots got started offensively early with a shot at 5:03, but Freed-Hardeman (10-4-2, 1-3-0 MSC) keeper
Eduardo Almansa knocked out the first chance of the match.
Brandon Carrillo responded with a shot on target at 8:28, but it was kept out as well.
The Patriots (10-2-1, 3-2-0 MSC) broke through at 17:28 with their first goal of the match. The Lions out-shot the Patriots 5-4 in the first half with both goalies making three saves.Â
The second half saw UC fire six shots toward the net with the Lions not able to generate offense. A Patriot goal at 58:01 was followed by a goal in the 89th minute to finish the 3-0 conference defeat for the Lions.
Brandon Carrillo took two shots with both being on the mark, while both of
Thabo Mahlaha's shots were on target, but saved.
