HENDERSON — In their final match at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex, the Freed-Hardeman Lions sent their seniors off with a big victory, topping the Tigers of Georgetown College 2-1.
In what was expected to be a physical defensive battle, the Lions (11-4-2, 2-3-0 MSC) took seven shots in the opening 45 minutes to the Tigers' four. Late in the period,
Brandon Carrillo and
Seabata Ts'emane fired back-to-back shots with both coming up empty to end the first half with a 0-0 draw.
After a set of FHU corners and a shot, it was Georgetown (8-5-2, 1-4-0 MSC) that found the back of the net first at 51:37. The Lions would not trail for long when
Vicente Georgi was fouled in the box, setting up a potential equalizing penalty kick. The Chilean fired a missile to the left of the keeper to level the scores at 1-1 at 62:43. Playing with a man advantage for the rest of the match, it was Julien Royer's heroics in the 85th minute when he took a pass from
Thabo Mahlaha and scored the game-winner in the 2-1 victory.
Avery Flener took a team-high five shots in his swan song, while Eduardo Almana made one save in the win.
