HENDERSON — In the first game of the 2024 FHU Classic, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions collected the low-scoring victory over Missouri Baptist University 48-31.
The Lady Lions (6-0) jumped ahead of the Spartans with a jumper from
Kaylee Odom before
Kelsey Bender bucketed back-to-back layups. FHU's defense stood strong with MBU not converting a single field goal in the first quarter, ending 0-12 with their lone points coming at the charity stripe with FHU leading 9-2.
Missouri Baptist (0-3) stayed cold in the second quarter finally breaking through with a 3-pointer at 3:27 to convert their first field goal in 20 attempts. The Lady Lions had
Carissa Curtis tally at jumper and a set of 3-pointers to push FHU's lead to 12 at the intermission with a 21-9 lead.
The third quarter was by far the highest-scoring frame with the former American Midwest Conference rivals combining for 37 points. Odom opened the second half with a pair of layups before Curtis continued to shoot the ball well with a 3-pointer at 4:27 giving the Lady Lions their largest lead at 18 points.
Rachel Satterly but a bow on the third quarter with a triple to give FHU a 42-25 lead moving into the final quarter.
Both teams tallied six points each, all from the floor to put a final in the box score with a 48-31 victory for FHU.
FHU held the opposition to a 22.4% night from the floor with the Lady Lions finishing at 35.2%. The Lions out-rebounded the Spartans 44-34.
Kaylee Odom led the FHU point-scorers with a game-high 13 points.
Carissa Curtis followed with 11 points. Though not scoring,
Lilly Kee grabbed a team-high nine boards and two blocks.
