PANAMA CITY, Fla. — The No. 7 Freed-Hardeman University Lions had their highest point total of the season in a 98-90 victory over the Southeastern (Fla.) University Fire. FHU had their most efficient shooting game by tallying a 66.1% from the field in the win.
FHU (8-1) took an early lead after
Geraldo Lane grabbed a rebound before streaking down the floor to lay in the first points of the game. The Lions and the fire traded blows until
Peyton Law showed off his range by knocking down three straight 3-pointers.
Makai Vassell then converted three-point play to give the Lions a 22-13 lead at 10:23. The hoop remained kind to FHU's 3-point shooting with
Phil Horton and
Jordan Stephens sinking triples to extend the Lion margin to 12 points.
Jayson Nixon joined the party with a 3-pointer to end the first half with the Lions leading 43-32. In the opening frame, Freed-Hardeman went 17-24 in the first half - shooting an outstanding 70.8% from the floor including going 6-7 from 3-point land.
Ryley McClaran opened up the second half with a layup on the fast break before
Geraldo Lane's steal ended with a thunderous dunk at 15:54 to give the Lions a 55-44 lead. FHU took their largest lead at 5:41 when
Brian Carter turned a steal into a layup to make the score 84-64. After three of the Lions' five starters fouled out, Southeastern (3-5) mounted a furious comeback in the final five minutes, mostly by going 6-6 from the charity stripe.
Phil Horton joined Nixon with free throws to put the game away to claim victory 98-90.
The Lion defense stood strong with eight blocks and 11 steals while holding Southeastern to 43% shooting from the floor.Â
Peyton Law again led FHU in the scoring column, going 9-10 - including 4-4 from long range - to bucket 23 points.
Geraldo Lane was right behind him with 18 points, while
Jordan Stephens and
Makai Vassell both tallied 11.
Phil Horton added 10 points to the cause. Law led the team with nine boards and three blocks.
