FHU torches net from long range in win

HENDERSON — The No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University Lions tied their season-high with 12 3-pointers in a 90-72 victory over the Tougaloo (Miss.) College Bulldogs.

Returning to the floor in Henderson for the first time in nearly a month, the Lions (12-1) wasted no time making themselves at home with triples from Ryley McClaran and Blake Dean giving the home team a 13-6 lead after five minutes of play. Tougaloo, in turn, would tally points themselves to eventually even the score 15-15 at the 11:34 mark. In the final ten minutes, the Lions never let the Bulldogs score more than two unanswered points while Geraldo Lane and Peyton Law collected layups before Jayson Nixon scored FHU's final eight points including two 3-pointers to coast ahead to a 39-25 halftime lead.

The whistles began to slow the pace of play in the second half, skyrocketing the foul total from a combined 10 to a combined 31 in the second frame. Lane opened the half with a dunk before the Bulldogs (6-3) scored four straight. Turnovers began to haunt Tougaloo with the Lions scoring eight points off of turnovers across two minutes of play including back-to-back 3-pointers from Dean. From 8:16 until the final buzzer, the Lions had two 3-pointers from McClaran, one from Jordan Stephens, and a jumper from Law. The remaining eight points came from the free-throw line. For Tougaloo, nine of their last 19 points came from the charity stripe.

In the 90-72 victory, the Lions forced 17 Bulldog turnovers, converting those into 24 points. FHU's ball-handling skills were on full display with the Lions collecting 12 steals and 18 assists with 27 fast-break points.

Peyton Law led FHU's offense by going 6-9 from the floor to score 19 points. Blake Dean scored a season-high 14 points with the help of four 3-pointers. Jayson Nixon bucketed 12 while Makai Vassell tallied 10. Vassell led FHU's rebounding with seven while Jordan Stephens had a team-high four steals and five assists. With three blocks, Law now sits with 23 blocks on his season, eclipsing the 20 he swatted in 2023-24 and tying the 23 from 2022-23. He is seven short of matching his freshman season's 30 in a season.
