Satterly sisters help FHU to 15-0 record

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. — The Satterly sisters combined for 31 points in (RV) Freed-Hardeman University's matchup with the (RV) Governors State (Ill.) University Jaguars. Another big fourth quarter helped the Lady Lions stay perfect in the 2024 calendar year with a 62-52 victory.

Jenna Satterly, earning her first career start, laid up the first basket for FHU (15-0) at 8:25 before Governors State answered with five straight points. Rachel Satterly then connected for a 3-pointer at 1:21, but the Jaguars tallied three in the quarter to end the opening quarter with the Lady Lions trailing 17-13.

FHU began transitioning inside the paint with R. Satterly making back-to-back 2-pointers before Kaylee Odom's layup gave the Lady Lions back the lead at 19-17. Kelsey Bender's layup at 5:32 was the last field goal for the Lady Lions, but the Jaguars (11-3) only scored two points from the floor in the same timeframe, leading FHU to a 23-22 lead at intermission.

Though Governors State would connect for a set of 3-pointers in the third quarter, the FHU front-court did the heavy lifting by scoring all 11 points, seven from Odom with Lilly Kee adding four. A last-second free throw ended the first 30 minutes with a 34-34 stalemate.

As they have all season long, Freed-Hardeman's play in the fourth quarter propelled them to claim victory. Despite only making five shots from the floor, the Lady Lions were an astounding 16-17 from the charity stripe in the final quarter with J. Satterly going 8-9. By the final horn, the Lady Lions escaped the GSU Winter Invite with a 62-52 victory.

Though only making one 3-pointer, the Lady Lions successfully adapted by scoring 28 points in the paint to GSU's eight. FHU's night was solid from the free-throw line by going 21-23 while the Jaguars were 10-20.

Jenna Satterly led the maroon and white with 16 points and two rebound shy of a double-double with a team-high eight boards. Rachel Satterly was not far behind, tallying 15 points with FHU's lone long ball. Kaylee Odom was 5-13 from the floor to score 11. Three Lady Lions shared the game-high of assists with Brooklyn Crouch joining Odom and R. Satterly with three helpers.

Up Next

The Lady Lions will flip the calendar to 2025 to have one more non-conference tuneup against Missouri Baptist. FHU bested MBU in their first meeting of the season 48-31 back in November.

Tipoff from the R. Alton Lacey Gymnasium St. Louis is set for 5:00 p.m. on January 3.
