FHU nearly upsets #3 Campbellsville

HENDERSON — The No. 23 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions led Saturday's contest with the No. 3 Campbellsville (Ky.) University Tigers for 35:37  where a big fourth quarter was too much to keep the upset bid alive as the Lady Lions fell in their return to the Brewer Sports Center 55-52.

Kaylee Odom had a massive first quarter, bucketing eight points off of layups for the Lady Lions (19-8, 5-6 MSC) in the opening frame. Rachel Satterly and Brooklyn Crouch would team up at the end of the quarter with 3-pointers to help take a 12-point lead before late scores by the Tigers ended the first quarter with FHU on top 21-10.

Campbellsville (24-1, 11-0 MSC) opened the second quarter the right way with a 3-pointer, but that was answered by the Lady Lions with another triple from Satterly. CU would then bucket back-to-back jumpers in the middle of the quarter before Elli Chumley tacked on a layup for FHU. A late flurry from the Tigers ended with a 3-pointer that saw FHU enter the break leading by a lone point 29-28.

Odom entered the second half with an old-fashioned three-point play to put FHU back on top by two possessions. Satterly's layup wold spark a 6-0 run before Brooklyn Crouch tallied a 3-pointer to give FHU a 41-32 lead with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter. The final 3:12 of the quarter went scoreless, with the Lady Lions leading 44-36 moving into the fourth quarter.

CU opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups before sinking five free throws to make the Lady Lions' lead a single possession. Odom landed a jumper to put the Lady Lions back on top by five, but Campbellsville would embark on a nine-point unanswered streak where a jumper at 4:23 gave the guests the lead. Crouch and Odom would draw the Lady Lions within one, but FHU could not sink the needed basket in the 55-52 loss.

Campbellsville was 15-23 from the charity stripe while the Lady Lions were successful on three of their five trips to the line. The Lady Lions characteristically moved the ball well, dishing out 10 assists.

Kaylee Odom led FHU's offense with 20 points and seven rebounds. Brooklyn Crouch and Raegan Purvine each gave out three assists.
