Lions end non-conference schedule with victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Stepping out of the Mid-South Conference for the final time in the 2023-24 season, the No. 8 Freed-Hardeman University Lions visited the Music City where they defeated the Bulldogs of Fisk (Tenn.) University 91-63.

The FHU (23-4, 9-2 MSC) offense got rolling quickly with Hunter Scurlock sparking an 8-0 run. On the other end of the floor, Fisk managed to stay in the game by hitting four straight three pointers. With 7:28 left in the first half, the Lions saw their lead erased with FIsk taking a two-point lead. Though not scoring until 2:45 were left in the half, Quan Lax would score the last 12 Lion points in a two-minute flurry to give the Lions a 42-26 lead at halftime.

Freed-Hardeman kept the momentum going into the start of the second half, out-scoring Fisk (13-13, 10-6 GCAC) 11-2 in the first four minutes of the half. Though the hosts would go on a run to score 11 unanswered points in the middle of the frame, Chase Fiddler broke the dry spell with a 3-pointer to give the Lions a 25-point edge. FHU would score the final seven points of the game with Phil Horton's layup on the fast break settling the score at 91-63.

FHU's transition play was stellar with the Lions bucketing 25 points off of turnovers, 23 of which were on the fast break. Conversely, despite forcing the same number of turnovers, Fisk managed 20 points off of turnovers with 10 being on breakouts. The Lions nearly doubled up the Bulldogs at the boards, out-rebounding the opposition 46-27.

Quan Lax's whirlwind at the end of the first half helped him to a team-high 14 points, followed by Phil Horton's 5-5 day from the field giving him 13 points. Peyton Law ended with 12 points as did Devin Tomlinson. Geraldo Lane finished with seven rebounds with Hunter Scurlock handing out a team-high five assists.
