MCKENZIE, Tenn. — The sixth-ranked Freed-Hardeman University Lions forced 16 turnovers in Saturday's Mid-South Conference matchup with the Bethel (Tenn.) University Wildcats. The Lions converted those to 29 points to help FHU defeat Bethel 82-58.
It was a low-scoring half for both the Lions (19-3, 6-1 MSC) and the Wildcats with neither team scoring for the first five possessions of the game until
Hunter Scurlock's layup at 18:36 got the Lions on the board. Bethel would answer with a jumper and a 3-pointer giving the Wildcats a lead. FHU only trailed for 56 second when
Geraldo Lane's layup put the Lions on top for good.
Chase Fiddler connected for a 3-pointer at 6:39 to start a 6-0 run for FHU. In the meantime, Bethel missed 11 consecutive field goals between 9:35 and 3:01. The Lions would close the opening half with another six-point run, ending the way it began when Scurlock's layup ended the half with the Lions leading 34-22.
The Lions continued to shoot the ball well over the Wildcats (12-11, 1-6 MSC), with
JJ Wheat's layup ending with a foul and a free throw followed by a 3-point jumper from
Sam Powell giving the Lions a 21-point edge. Fiddler would connect for another 3-pointer in the middle of a nine-point run that ended with the Lions leading 67-46 with 5:13 remaining in the game. FHU would drive into the paint the rest of the game to close the book on the 82-58 victory.
While the Lions scored 29 points off of Bethel's 16 turnovers, the Wildcats only managed four points off of FHU's nine giveaways.
Freed-Hardeman was led offensively by
Hunter Scurlock and
JJ Wheat who each tabulated 14 points.
Quan Lax added 12Â points in the win while
Geraldo Lane and
Chase Fiddler both adding 11 points. Scurlock led at the boards with six rebounds with Wheat taking away a team-high five steals.
