HENDERSON — After claiming one of the four national No. 1 seeds, the Freed-Hardeman University Lions have punched their ticket to the round of 16 held in Kansas City, Missouri's Municipal Auditorium for the second straight year after winning their regional of th NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship First and Second Rounds Presented by Ballogy, topping the regional 4-seed Point Park (Penn.) University Pioneers 84-67.
Hunter Scurlock and
Ryley McClaran got the Brewer Sports Center faithful on their feet with a Scurlock hitting a jumper before McClaran tallied a 3-pointer to give the Lions (28-4) an early edge.
Devin Tomlinson would add a bucket at 15:45 to put the Lions on top 11-5. The visiting Pioneers were able to score six points on back-to-back fouled 3-point attempts to tie the game 11-11. For the remainder of the first half FHU and PPU traded scores until a jumper with 42 ticks remaining gave Point Park a 38-36 lead at intermission.
McClaran opened the second half by giving the Lions the lead back over Point Park (30-3) with a 3-pointer before Scurlock sparked an 8-0 run capped by a 3-pointer from
Phil Horton to give the Lions a 49-41 edge. The Pioneers were deadly from the free-throw line, scoring seven of the next nine points from the charity stripe to reclaim a 50-49 lead for the green and gold. As has been typical for the Lions this season, a late run stunned the opposition with the Lions scoring 14 points across two minutes to the Pioneers' two in the same span. At 1:25,
Geraldo Lane slammed down the largest lead of the game for FHU - 18 - to give the Lions an 82-64 lead before late scores finished the second round with an 84-67 win.
The Lions forced 15 Point Park turnovers, converting those to 20 points. Point Park was fantastic on the offensive glass, out-rebounding FHU 18-7.Â
After a 17-point explosion in the second half,
Geraldo Lane led the Lions with 26 points.
Hunter Scurlock wrapped up the game with 17 points, while Quan Lan tallied 13 points.
Ryley McClaran was 3-5 from deep to bucket 11 points.
