Softball earns two late victories

GULF SHORES, Ala. — After rain washed out the first day of the Gulf Shores Invitational, the No. 20 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions tallied two wins on Saturday. FHU first rode a six-run third inning to top the University of Houston-Victoria 10-7 before topping Thomas (Fla.) University 4-0.

Game 1
FHU - 10
UHV - 7

Natalie Gilmore got things rolling for the Lady Lions (7-5) with a single to left before advancing thanks to a wild pitch. Gilmore would later score when Brooklyn Jimmerson drove her home with a single before Chloe Carter legged out an infield single to drive home the second run of the frame. Carter would score herself when Alivia Eggleston laced a two-out single to finish a three-run first inning.

After the UHV Jaguars (7-3) picking up a run in the bottom of the first, Molli Deere opened the top of the six-run third inning with a single to left field before Chloe Carter and Brinley Cousar loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. Eggleston would drive two runs home with a double before Kiersten Mesler recorded the same. Batting around in the frame, Deere's two-out single up the middle drove in two runs to give the Lady Lions a 9-1 edge.

UHV picked up runs in the third and fifth innings to enter the seventh inning with FHU leading 9-4. Gilmore closed the scoring for the Lady Lions with a two-out single to help FHU to the 10-7 victory.

Kylee Brown (4-2) got the win in the circle by striking out five in the complete-game win.

The Lady Lions pounded out 13 hits in the victory, with Natalie Gilmore, Molli Deere, Chloe Carter, Brinley Cousar, and Alivia Eggleston each tallying two base hits. Eggleston's three-RBI night led FHU's run production.

Game 2
Thomas - 0
FHU - 4

The Lady Lions (8-5) bats stayed hot into the second game of the day, following up their 13-hit victory with a seven-hit win over Thomas.

Brinley Cousar led off the bottom of the second frame with a double, eventually scoring after a wild throw from the Thomas (5-11) fielder. FHU and Thomas would swap scoreless innings until scoring a second unearned run in the bottom of the fifth after Karli Quillin reached on an error. Eventually moving to third, Qullin scored on Brooklyn Jimmerson's sacrifice fly to give FHU a 2-0 edge.

Quillin would strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning when her single drove home a pair of runs to cap off the 4-0 victory.

Chloe Winters (1-3) had a tremendous night in the circle, striking out 10 batters in a two-hit shutout.

Natalie Gilmore and Brinley Cousar both connected for two hits while Karli Quillin drove in a team-high three runs.
