Early runs help Lions top Chargers

HENDERSON — The No. 25 Freed-Hardeman University Lions put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning before the Briar Cliff (Iowa) University Chargers made things interesting in the Lions' 4-3 victory Monday night.

Christian Presley led off the bottom of the first for FHU (17-3) before moving into scoring position with Brady Spring's single. With a double-steal putting runners on second and third, Jordan Carter's single drove home Presley for the game's first run. Cam Madding's groundout would then score Spring before a sacrifice bunt from Cade Fuller brought home Carter fo give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

Briar Cliff (5-8) would pick up one run in the top of the second inning before a two-run homer in the top of the fifth knotted the game 3-3.

Carter reached base safely on a walk with one out in the bottom of the sixth before moving to third with Madding's one-out single. Fuller would sacrifice his at-bat to drive home what proved to be the winning run.

The top of the ninth got interesting when two singles and a walk loaded the bases for BCU with one out. Evan Koob would strike out the next batter before recording the final out and help the Lions to a 4-3 win.

Matthew Riley (4-0) struck out four Chargers in six innings of work before Riley Keesey and Hunter Bennett both recorded holds to set up Evan Koob to tally his seventh save of the season.

Brady Spring was the only Lion with a multi-hit game while Cade Fuller drove in two of the Lions' four runs.
