Lady Lions take two over Toppers

HENDERSON — Dodging scattered showers, the Freed-Hardeman Univesrity Lady Lions softball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories over the Lady Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) University. FHU run-ruled the toppers for a 10-0 win in five innings before scoring nine in the sixth to win game two 9-2.

Game 1
BMCU - 0
FHU - 10

In the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Lions (17-10) had a two-out rally started by Kiersten Perry connecting for a two-run double to score both Chloe Carter and Myleah Hardy who both reached with singles. Karli Qullin would leg out an infield single to plate Grayson Mayo to put FHU on top 3-0.

Alivia Eggleston led off the bottom of the third bay taking a 2-2 pitch from the Topper (13-18) starter into left-center for a leadoff double. Carter would score Eggleston's pinch-runner, Emily Moorehead, with a single through the left side to put the Lions on top 5-0. Mayo would lift a sacrifice fly to score Cousar before Perry drove in her third run of the game with a single to give FHU a 7-0 edge.

Another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning from Carter scored the eight run before Brooklyn Jimmerson took advantage of a BMCU error. A wild pitch scratched across the 10th run for the Lady Lions to seal the victory.

Brittany Adair (5-3) struck out eight batters in four innings of work without surrendering a walk.

Kiersten Perry was 2-3 with three RBI while Myleah Hardy had three hits. Chloe Carter and Brinley Cousar both had a pair of hits in the win.

Game 2
BMCU - 2
FHU - 9

After being held scoreless for five innings, the Lady Lions (18-10) poured on nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the victory in game two.

Blue Mountain Christian (13-19) opened up the second game of the day with four base hits including a two-run double to take an early lead.

The teams traded four innings of scoreless softball before Natalie Gilmore and Alivia Eggleston led off the bottom of the sixth with a set of singles. After Brooklyn Jimmerson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Chloe Carter singled to bring home one run. Brinley Cousar contined her banner season with a two-run double to take a 3-2 lead. Kiersten Mesler lifted a sacrifice fly to score a run before Molli Deere's single put runners on the corners. A perfectly executed delayed double-steal put Deere into scoring position while allowing Cousar to steal home. Karli Quillin had an RBI single before Gilmore continued how he started the inning, this time with a two-run double. Jimmerson finished off the big inning with a sacrifice fly to give the Lady Lions the 9-2 victory.

Chloe Winters (5-3) picked up the win after pitching two innings in relief of starter Katelyn Bradford.

Brinley Cousar and Natalie Gilmore both drove in two runs in the second game, with Gilmore joining Chloe Carter, Alivia Eggleston, and Karli Quillin with two hits each.
