Lions surrender 11 runs in ninth, fall to Tigers

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Despite a game-tying grand slam in the home half of the seventh inning, the Freed-Hardeman Lions saw the Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers plate 11 runs in the top of the ninth to fall to GC in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament 18-7.

Despite a run crossing in the top of the first inning, the Lions (30-17-1) answered in the bottom of the first inning with Jordan Carter's leadoff double. After an obstruction call allowed Carter to move to third, a throw home sailed wide to allow Carter to score the tying run. With GC tying the game 2-2 in the top of the second, FHU tacked on two more runs after singles from JJ Pruneau and Austin Johnson was followed by a two-run single from Brady Spring to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.

A leapfrogging first three innings saw Georgetown (29-21) score two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning before each team handed the ball to the bullpens. The Tigers were able to score three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

Pruneau and Johnson led off the bottom of the seventh with singles. Dawson Massengale sacrificed his at-bat to move both runners into scoring position but was able to reach safely due to a GC error. Carter then took advantage of the baes-loaded situation and unloaded with a home run over the fence in left field to score the tying run at 7-7.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Georgetown exploited five walks where they scored 11 runs off of six hits. A 30-minute weather delay ended the big inning but not before a grand slam from the Tigers ended the scoring at 18-7.

Colton Huntt had a no-decision start where he struck out six batters in four innings. Seth Creasy (3-1) was saddled with the loss after tossing 2 2/3 innings.

Jordan Carter was 3-4 including the grand slam. JJ Pruneau and Austin Johnson each hit two singles.
