BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — For the second consecutive game, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lions and their opponents scored all of the runs in one inning. Yesterday it was the fifth, today it was the sixth inning when the Lady Lions scored two runs to the No. 4 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots' one to advance to the Mid-South Conference championship game.
Karli Quillin and
Natalie Gilmore led of the game with back-to-back bunt singles; however, neither were able to advance. The rest of the second-seeded Lady Lions (30-16) went down in order before Quilin replicated her first at-bat with a bunt single before the inning ended without a score.
The heart of FHU's order finally cracked the top-seeded Cumberlands' (43-6) code in the top of the sixth inning with
Alivia Eggleston landing a single just inside the left-field line. Her pinch-runner,
Gracie Wilson, advanced to third when
Brooklyn Jimmerson tallied a double to put a pair in scoring position with no outs. Back-to-back groundouts were placated by Gilmore scoring on Chloe Charter's at-bat and
Brinley Cousar driving home Jimmerson to take a 2-0 edge.
UC had a two-out rally in the bottom half of the frame with a double being followed by an RBI single to set the score at 2-1 in favor of the Lady Lions.
The Patriots led off the seventh inning with a walk, but FHU slammed the door on the regular season champions to claim the 2-1 win.
Brittany Adair (8-4) had the win where she surrendered one run in six innings of effort.
Chloe Winters notched her fourth save by retiring all three batters she faced.
Karli Quillin was 3-4 from the dish while
Brooklyn Jimmerson had a pair of hits in the victory.
