Women's basketball blows past Oakwood to open season

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Opening the 2025-26 campaign on the road, the No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions basketball team cruised to an 83-48 win over the Oakwood (Ala.) University Ambassadors.

Though the hosts began the game with a basket, the Lady Lion (1-0) defense took over and did not allow another made field goal in the opening frame with Oakwood finishing the quarter going 0-12. On the other end of the floor Lilly Kee took over to net 12 points in the last six minutes of the first quarter. Carissa Curtis dropped the first 3-pointer of the season at 2:49 before Kee's jumper gave FHU a 19-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of the season.

The Lady Lions went 9-10 from the charity stripe in the second quarter against the Ambassadors (0-2) while Ally Weathers scored a 3-pointer in her career debut to help push FHU to a 34-12 lead. Rachel Satterly would cap a 9-0 run for the Lady Lions with a fast break layup before Curtis scored a set of triples to close the half with FHU leading 45-17.

Oakwood would come out strong in the second half by scoring more points in the third quarter than in the entire first half. Fortunately for the Lady Lions, they also lit the net on fire in the quarter from long range - dropping five from long range including three more from Curtis. Her last one ended the quarter with FHU ahead 66-36.

The long ball stayed in play for FHU in the final 10 minutes with 12 of FHU's 17 points in the final frame coming from beyond the arc. Jenna Satterly scoring five quick points before Alaina Stiles sealed the 83-48 win with a 3-pointer.

Carissa Curtis led the Lady Lions with 21 points by going 7-15 from long range. Lilly Kee opened her sophomore campaign with 16 points while Rachel Satterly and Ally Weathers each tallied 12 points.Jenna Satterly went 4-4 from the free-throw line to help her to an 11 point opener. R. Satterly led FHU at the glass with eight rebounds.
