HENDERSON — Hope Breen led the Lady Lions with 20 kills in Friday's match against the Campbellsville University Tigers. It took five sets, but the Tigers outlasted the Lady Lions 3-2 (26-28, 28-26, 25-17, 23-25, 15-6) in Mid-South Conference action.
Neither team could get a foothold in the first set with the Lady Lions (11-9, 0-3 MSC) and the Tigers drawing even 17 different times in the first set while swapping leads seven times. Campbellsville went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 14-10 lead, but kills from Breen,
Morgan Jackson, and
Audrey Orton helped FHU climb back to take a 17-16 lead. Back-to-back Breen kills claimed the opening set for FHU 28-26.
Campbellsville (13-10, 3-1 MSC) answered in the second set by taking advantage of a 5-1 run in the middle of the frame to lead 13-11. FHU would eventually take a 22-20 lead thanks to a pair of service aces from
Alyssa Austin, but the Tigers fended off two set points before claiming the set 28-26 to even the match.
The third set featured streaks from both squads, but Campbellsville's potent offense pushed the Tigers to a 2-1 match lead before FHU smacked 14 kills in the fourth set to force a fifth.
Campbellsville had two big blocks in the decisive set before a kill got the guests fo eight first with an 8-5 lead. CU kept momentum to eventually jump out to a 13-5 lead. A block from
Iza Wos and Jackson hoped to spark an FHU comeback, but the Tigers got the final point to win the set and the match.
Hope Breen was unstoppable with her 20 kills being the most by a Lady Lion this season.
Audrey Orton and
Avery Young each collected double-doubles with Orton getting 14 kills, Young smashing 10, and both getting 12 digs.
