HENDERSON — In her sophomore campaign,
Alyssa Austin eclipsed the 1,000 assist mark in Freed-Hardeman's big win over the Lady Eagles of Williams Baptist (Ark.) University 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) on Tuesday.
Avery Young got the game going for the Lady Lions (12-10) with a kill before
Marija Milic joined the fray with a kill. The visiting Eagles made a comeback to narrow the gap to 13-10 before a service ace from Young pushed FHU to a 16-10 lead. Another Milic ace was followed by a block from
Hope Breen and
Iza Wos continued the Lady Lion lead until winning the first set 25-16.
The second set began close enough with the Lady Eagles (1-20) holding a 9-8 lead; however, the Lady Lions would go on an 8-0 run capped by a Milic kill to jump out to a 15-9 edge. Any time Williams Baptist would close the gap, the Lions would go on a run until
Morgan Jackson's kill gave the Lady Lions a 2-0 match edge with a 25-18 set victory.
Freed-Hardeman ran the table in the third sed with
Becca Heineman anchoring a run that began with the squads tied 4-4 and ended with a tandem block from Wos and
Audrey Orton giving the Lady Lions a 14-4 lead. FHU finally put the bow on the match with a 25-13 set win to secure the sweep.
FHU dominated every aspect of the match, slamming 40 kills to the Eagles' seven. Freed-Hardeman had 17 service aces while WBU had five.
Audrey Orton led with a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs, a team-high in both statistics.
Marija Milic trailed with 10 kills.
Alyssa Austin's 1,000th career kill was one of 19 assists in the win.
