HENDERSON —Playing their second game in as many days, the No. 5 Freed-Hardeman University Lions hosted the Cavaliers of Montreat (N.C.) College.
Lane Lauderbaugh made his name known in Henderson by going 7-11 from the floor to tally 20 points in a 79-64 victory.
The Lions (3-0) had a slow start after Jamarcus Russell's made jumper was followed by a dry spell of six straight misses from the floor. On the other end of the court, the Cavaliers were knocking down 3-pointers with one at 8:37 giving Montreat a 20-19 lead.Lauderbaugh's jumper gave FHU the lead back before a 6-0 run helped close out the first half with the Lions on top 35-31.
The second half began all Lauderbaugh with the veteran transfer scoring all 10 of the Lions' first points in the second half. Jumpers from
DJ McIntyre and
Cam Hudson gave FHU a double-digit lead with the score set at 54-41 with 10:33 remaining. The Lions were sent to the charity stripe 26 different times in the second frame, with the Lions making the free throw 21 times. By the final horn, FHU claimed the 79-64 victory.
The Lions forced 17 turnovers in the win, turning those into 20 points. FHU's bench again made the difference, outscoring Montreat's bench 35-11.
Lane Lauderbaugh led FHU with 20 points while
Rodney Henderson and
Phil Horton each chipping in with 11 points each. Horton led FHU at the glass with six rebounds.
