FHU cruises to win to open UHSP Classic

ST. LOUIS — In the first game of the UHSP Tip-Off Classic, the No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions had four players touch double digits in a 92-78 win over St. Thomas (Fla.) University Bobcats.

The 3-point line was used early and often by both clubs with four different Lady Lions (3-0) tallying triples for the first four baskets of the game. After Rachel Satterly, Brooklyn Crouch, and Carissa Curtis knocked down trays, Jenna Satterly's 3-pointer gave FHU a slim margin. Neither team would hold a lead larger than four points in the first quarter with the opening frame ending FHU's way 22-21.

The Lady Lions created separation from St. Thomas (1-1) to start the second quarter by tallying nine unanswered points to jump out to a 31-21 advantage. Lilly Kee tallied 10 of her night's 25 buckets in the quarter, including the final two points of the first half with FHU ahead 49-37.

After missing their first two shots of the second half, FHU got comfortable from the floor, going 11-12 the remaining 10 minutes. Curtis tallied a 3-pointer to make the Lady Lion lead 20 before a six-point run ended the quarter with the Lady Lions leading 77-52.

R. Satterly tacked on another 3-pointer to start the quarter before back-to-back layups from Lilly Kee gave FHU their largest lead at 27. STU put up a fight in the final minutes by scoring 11 unanswered points, but the FHU lead was insurmountable with a 92-78 win for the ladies in maroon and white.

Lilly Kee led all scorers with a career-high 25 points while finishing two rebounds shy of a double-double with a game-high eight rebounds. Jenna Satterly was not far behind with a 19-point effort. Brooklyn Crouch and Rachel Satterly each registered 10 points in the victory.
