Horton's double-double pushes Lions to victory

SHREVEPORT, La. — Leading the No. 5 Freed-Hardeman University Lions in both points and rebounds, Phil Horton helped FHU to a 77-61 win over the (RV) LSU Shreveport Pilots to complete the non-conference season sweep.

Freed-Hardeman (9-1) and LSU Shreveport could not determine a solid leader in the first half with FHU's 10-point lead at 8:22 being the largest of the half. Phil Horton had a strong start with seven points in the first four minutes of the game before DJ McIntyre's 3-pointer at 14:47 gave the Lions a 14-9 lead. Sam Powell later connected for back-to-back 3-pointers before Lane Lauderbaugh's old-fashioned three-point play at 8:22 gave FHU the 28-18 lead. The hosting Pilots then scored nine unanswered points to pull within a single point. An LSUS triple gave the hosts a lead in the final minute of the half, but FHU hit a pair of free throws to end the half knotted up at 32-32.

Powell opened the second frame with another 3-pointer before the Pilots' (3-3) seven-point run five minutes into the game kept LSUS within one possession. Blake Dean's free throws began a 13-0 run for the Lions that ended with buckets from Jailen Anderson, Rico Sain, and Caleb Thomas. The Pilots scored six points to make the Lion lead single digits, but FHU scored 10 of the last 12 points with Horton's free throws cementing the 77-61 victory.

Lane Lauderbaugh went 6-9 from the field to lead FHU's offense with 17 points and a team-high four assists. Phil Horton tallied 14 points with a career-high 13 rebounds to secure the double-double. Rico Sain chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
