HENDERSON —With a raucous homecoming crowd filling up the Brewer Sports Center, the No. 5 Freed-Hardeman University Lions swished 14 3-pointers to claim victory over the Faulkner (Ala.) University Eagles 91-56.
The Freed-Hardeman (4-1) defense made their presence known, holding the Eagles to a 1-11 mark from the floor over the first five minutes of the game. On their side of the floor,
Phil Horton's layup was followed by a 3-pointer from
Blake Dean. A steal and score from
Rico Sain helped FHU lauch to a 15-4 advantage by the 11:24 mark. The Eagles finally began getting shots to fall, but the final five minutes of the first half were all Lions with FHU out-scoring Faulkner 19-2. Six consecutive fast point buckets pushed the Lions to hold a 47-19 lead at the break.
Through the second half, the Lions never allowed the Eagles (3-1) to pull within 20 points - and that despite the Eagles scoring 11 unanswered points. After Dean sank another triple,
Jamarcus Powell had a layup that was followed by five straight points from
Sam Powell. Late free throws for the maroon and white sealed the game and FHU cruised to a 91-56 victory.
FHU forced 22 turnovers and converted those to 37 points off of turnovers. The Lion bench scored 40 points to the Eagles' 21.
Phil Horton pushed the Lion offense with a team-high 16 points.
Sam Powell followed with 14 while
Blake Dean's four 3-pointers helped him tally 12 points. Jalen Anderson bucketed 10 points in his FHU debut while also leading the Lions with five rebounds and seven assists.
