Lions exact revenge on Phoenix

HENDERSON — Avenging an earlier loss in Lebanon the No. 4 Freed-Hardeman University Lions picked up an 89-61 victory over the Cumberland University Phoenix Thursday night.

Peyton Law got the game going with a slam dunk on the first Freed-Hardeman (21-4, 6-3 MSC) possession of the game before answering with a layup on the next possession. FHU and CU then swapped scores for the next four possessions until Blake Dean's jumper at 14:12 opened a 16-2 run that ended with a set of Phil Horton layups that gave the Lions a 22-10 lead. After a pair of free throws from Cumberland Horton tallied another layup before Jordan Stephens connected for the first 3-pointer of the day for either team. Horton would end the half with a 3-pointer to push FHU's lead to 35-21.

Cumberland (12-13, 5-5 MSC) had a hot start to the second act by scoring four fast break points to make it an eight point game as late as 15:28. Sam Powell's layup was followed by a layup and a dunk from Geraldo Lane to push the Lion lead to 45-31. Jayson Nixon then took over to score five straight points to open a 7-0 run for the Lions. FHU got hot from long range late with Sam Powell and Dean putting the game out of reach of the Phoenix for the 89-61 victory.

The Freed-Hardeman bench continues to be a massive threat, scoring 37 points to Cumberland's nine bench points. Each team was 63% from the charity stripe with FHU going 10-16 while the Phoenix were 19-30.

Peyton Law led FHU's offense with 16 points while both Phil Horton and Geraldo Lane were one rebound shy of a double-double. Horton tallied 15 points to join his nine boards while Lane ended with 10 points and nine rebounds. Sam Powell tallied 13 points while Blake Dean dropped 11. Jordan Stephens led with six assists with Lane taking away a team-high four steals.
