Women's basketball makes it five in a row

HENDERSON — Continuing the second half of the Mid-South Conference schedule the No. 7 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions completed the season sweep of the Cumberland University Phoenix at home 51-44.

It was a 3-point competition for the Satterly sister who pushed the Lady Lion (22-3, 6-3 MSC) lead with three triples from Rachel Satterly while Jenna Satterly knocked one down at 3:09 to take a 13-9 lead. Kelsey Bender's and-one conversion helped FHU to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Lion defense stepped up big in the second quarter, holding the Phoenix (8-17, 0-10 MSC) to a 4-18 mark in the frame. Meanwhile the Lady Lions had points in the paint from Kaylee Odom and Brooklyn Crouch before Alaina Stiles joined the fray with a long ball. Bender added a set of jumpers to push the FHU lead to 33-22 at intermission.

R. Satterly opened the second half with a 3-pointer before Bender added another layup. A layup from Odom at 3:32 gave FHU their largest lead at 17 points with a 42-25 differential. Cumberland answered the call to score the final six points of the third to advance to the fourth quarter with a 42-31 lead in favor of FHU.

The Phoenix mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter by out-scoring the Lady Lions 13-9. The early lead helped FHU keep the momentum to secure the 51-44 victory.

Though the Lady Lions committed more turnovers than the opposition 21-19, FHU connected for 18 points off of the turnovers as opposed to 11 made by the Phoenix.

Rachel Satterly led the FHU offense with 16 points including four 3-pointers. Kelsey Bender recorded 11 points while Jenna Satterly was just behind iwht 10 points. R. Satterly and Bender shared the team high of eight rebounds while Brooklyn Crouch tallied five assists.
