HENDERSON — The Lions of Freed-Hardeman University played at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex for the first time in the 2025 season and felt right at home, score five goals in a 5-0 victory over the Talladega (Ala.) College Tornadoes.
Tyler Burns got the scoring started for the Lions in the 21st minute when he sent a long strike over the keeper's head to give FHU (4-0-0) an early lead. Burns would help out a few minutes later when his pass to
Avery Flener who was able to send off a time-timer before a sliding Tornado could make contact with the ball.
With a 2-0 halftime lead over the Tornadoes (0-3-0), Burns was not finished when he led a pass to
Thabo Mahlaha who won a footrace to tap the ball past the keeper to give the Lions a 3-0 lead at 70:04.
Braiden Logan would add the fourth goal in the 76th minute when he was left wide open on the left flank, easily streaking to the danger zone where he tallied a goal. Flener put a bow on the day when he accepted a through pass from
David Kangni to bury his second goal of the day at 79:40 to seal the win.
The Lions out-shot the opposition 20-8 with
Eduardo Almansa keeping out all five shots on target to record his second consecutive clean sheet.
