HENDERSON — The Freed-Hardeman University Lions grabbed a 1-0 Labor Day win over the Skyhawks of Point (Ga.) University Skyhawks from the boot of
Martin Theissen.
A close match where the Lions (5-0-0) had a 52% possession percentage to the Skyhawks' 48%,
Thabo Mahlaha got the first shot off in the fifth minute. Freed-Hardeman would add pressure in the late minutes of the first half until Mahlaha found a seam where
Martin Theissen took possession at the arc where he fired the game-winner past the Point keeper at 39:51.
The Skyhawks (1-1-1) had their best chance at 57:16 when a shot came streaking in from the left side of the box, but
Eduardo Almansa was able to make a diving stop to record his third straight clean sheet with.
Felipe Benavides came inches away from making it a two-goal game in the 82nd minute, but the Point goalie made the save.
Freed-Hardeman kept the pressure on Point with 14 shots - six of where were on target.
Thabo Mahlaha had a team-high five shots including one on-goal to go with his helper while
David Kangni had three shots. In addition to his goal
Martin Theissen had one other shot on target.
