COLUMBUS, Miss. — The Freed-Hardeman University's Lion's soccer team visited the Magnolia State to face the Mississippi University for Women Owls on Thursday night.
Tiro Nong got his first action of the season and made the most of them: scoring two goals to lead FHU to a 4-2 victory.
It took just over five minutes for the Lions (6-0-0) to get on the board when
Thabo Mahlaha airmailed a pass down the right side of the pitch where Nong got his first collegiate shot off. That shot was right into the keeper's hands; however, the Owl netminder could not hold on and FHU took a 1-0 lead. Nong would strike again at 10:59 when
Martin Theissen's cross setled perfectly at the freshman's feet where he launched a no-doubter to put the Lions up 2-0.
Theissen himself would net a goal in the 22nd minute after a through pass from Mahlaha drew the MUW (1-4-0) keeper out of his net. Theissen collected the ball and easily sent it the final 10 yards to the back of the net to take a 3-0 advantage. The Lions' final goal came at 41:17 when the Lions had a corner that both teams attempted to clear with a header until the ball nestled at the boot of
Samuel Sebagabo who was able to record the final FHU goal of the match.
The Owls were able to score two goals in the final 20 minutes of action after a majority of the FHU starters had been given the remainder of the night to rest.Â
