Conway, Ark. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions (2-1) basketball team took on the Mustangs of Central Baptist (2-2) for their first away contest of the season.
The first 2 buckets of the game were by Caleb Thomas with an assist from Rico Yarbrough, the first after a Yarbrough offensive rebound and the second from a Yarbrough steal. A DJ McIntyre layup at 13:08 opened up a 10-0 run by the Lions, including 4 from Eli Pounders. A couple of Mustang free throws broke up the run, but the Lions answered with a 14-0 run over the next 4 minutes. In that run, McIntyre scored 5, and Pounders and Yarbrough threw down back to back fast break dunks, before Taveon Comage ended the run with a fast break layup. For the remainder of the half, the Mustangs were able to keep the Lions at bay, and go into the half with the score in favor of the Lions 44-24.
Trading buckets in the first minutes of the second half, the Lions went on a quick 5-0 run to increase their lead to 22 with 13 minutes left in the game. Central Baptist was able to cut the lead down to 13 at the halfway point, but the Lions fought back and ever so slightly pulled back away from the Mustangs, before a 12-0 run put the game out of reach with 3 minutes left, and the Lions leading by 33. The 12-0 run stretched 3 minutes, and included McIntrye scoring another 6 points and Jackson Grisham throwing down a dunk inside the paint with an assist from Derrick Roberson. In the end, it was the Lions on top 86-57.
DJ McIntyre, coming off the bench for the first time this season, led the scoring with 15. Caleb Thomas added 12, Taveon Comage with 11, and Eli Pounders and Derrick Roberson each had 10. Roberson led the rebounding with 9.
The Lions shot 62.1% from the field, with 68 of their 86 points coming in the paint, and 20 fastbreak points off of 14 steals.
